BARRED OWLS
Barred Owls get their names from the
distinct bars on their feathers. These vertical bars are located
on their chest and belly. Barred Owls have no ear tufts. Their eyes
are dark brown. They have a bright yellow beak. This species of
owl stands 17-24 inches tall and weighs around 2-3 pounds. Females
are usually larger than males.
Barred Owls nest in tree cavities or occasionally an old crow nest.
The eggs are laid from January to April. The female will usually
lay two to four white eggs. She will then incubate the eggs for
28-33 days when they hatch. The young will hatch and leave the nest
after six weeks, but fledgling stage lasts into late summer or early
fall.
The Barred Owl has a wide variety of calls with their most recognized
being: Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all? Click here
