EASTERN SCREECH OWLS
There are two color phases found in the
Eastern Screech Owl, a gray phase and a red phase. These owls are
one of the smallest owls found in Iowa, only weighing 8 ounces.
Eastern Screech Owls are known to nest in tree cavities, old woodpecker
holes and even nesting boxes built for songbirds.
Anywhere from 4 to 6 white eggs are laid in April and by July the
young have left the nest to hunt on their own.
